The best home business that you can be sure is not a scam is one that you start yourself. It will depend on what you want, how you define to be interesting. A person may consider a pet sitting business to be the most exciting work in the world, while another person would rather watch TV than take care of dogs.
The key is to determine what your interests are, what you want to do, what is suitable for your lifestyle and your overall goals, and what can fit with your resources.

Really no such thing as an “easy” home based business anymore.
Your best bet for success would probably be developing a successful (popular) website and then selling advertising/some kind of service or both. Remember to use your knowledge base and past experience to help choose a business model that you will be able to run effectivly.
Some of my old mmorpg friends from Everquest for instance were making pretty good money selling online guides and ingame items/gold to people via services like paypal. I’m not sure if they’re still doing it. I know one guy doing that was making 40,000-50,000 thousand a year in that field but I kinda suspect he was dodging income taxes and that’s probably caught up to him by now.
Remember that you need to be interested/passionate about whatever field you go into or you’ll be miserable and not do as well as you would otherwise.
Some other options that’ll be suggested are going to be:
Online merchenting (i.e. Amazon Marketplace, Ebay, etc). Making money this way is becoming increasingly hard as more and more people try to jump into it. Your essentially not providing any kind of service just buying stuff and trying to sell it for more which is possible but difficult due to the large number of businesses and invidvudals already trying this. They’re presence drives purchase prices up and what your ultimately able to sell stuff for down.
Day Care: Sounds good but if you can’t get large at all without having to comply with all sorts of state and federal regulations that are expensive to maintain and often carry hefty fines for violating.

try starting a web site for something local (to your city) and build up some traffic and than rake money in for advertising, I read somewhere that some college kids did the same and after some traffic that came their way they are making close to 1 mill/ year on adds.

Just kidding! But why not find something you love to do instead of something easy? If you don’t have a passion for it, you probably wont stick with it. And your business has to show a profit for at least 3 out of the first 5 years for you to get the income tax benefits.

It really depends on what you want to do.
There’s E-bay where you get to sell products for other people but if you don’t want to start with a lot of money, look for drop shippers who would ship the products for you right into your customer’s door.
You might also want to check out affiliate programs like http://www.linkshare.com that has a great affiliate program where you can promote other companies’ products and earn commission from them.
I would highly suggest that you go check out Robert G. Allen’s Book, Multiple Streams of Internet Income. A friend shared with me that he does mystery shopping so you can check that out.
You may also join network marketing groups (not my preferrance b/c I’m a creative entreprenaur, but your choice…) where you can try to get residual income.
If you know about real estate, you might try making deals with no money down (suggest that you try to get educated in RE b/f becoming a RE investor), or play around with stocks.
The possibilities are endless…..
